A Complete Guide to Moving a Home Library and Large Book Collection

Books are often among the most treasured possessions in a home. From everyday novels and children's books to academic collections and rare editions, they require careful organisation during relocation.

Although individual books are usually easy to handle, a large collection can become surprisingly heavy. Learning how to pack books for moving house helps protect their condition while making loading and unpacking more manageable.

Sort Your Collection Before Packing

Start by reviewing your bookshelves and deciding which books you want to keep, donate, sell or recycle.

Sorting before packing reduces the number of cartons required and makes it easier to organise your collection at the new property. Group books by category, author, subject or room. If you maintain a home library catalogue, consider updating it before the move.

Choose Strong, Small Cartons

Books are dense and can make large cartons extremely heavy. Use strong, manageable boxes rather than filling oversized cartons with books.

  • Place heavier books at the bottom and lighter books above them.
  • Keep the total weight manageable so cartons can be lifted safely without straining or breaking.
  • Reinforce the bottom seams with suitable packing tape. Avoid using damaged boxes or containers with weak handles.

Pack Different Types of Books Carefully

  • Hardcover books: Can generally be packed upright or flat, provided they are supported and not forced tightly together.
  • Paperback books: Should be protected from bending and excessive pressure. Avoid placing heavy objects on top of delicate editions.
  • Valuable editions: Use suitable protective wrapping and avoid exposing them to moisture, direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.

Do not pack books while they are damp. Moisture trapped inside a sealed carton can contribute to mould and damage.

Label Every Box Clearly

Write the room destination and a short description on each carton. For example, labels such as "Study — Reference Books" or "Bedroom — Novels" make unpacking easier.

For a large collection, number each box and maintain a simple inventory. Keep essential workbooks, documents and frequently used reference materials in a separate carton that can be accessed immediately.

Plan the New Library Layout

Before moving day, decide where your bookshelves will be placed. Measure the available wall space and check that the shelving is suitable for the weight of the collection.

Heavy book cartons should be positioned safely during unloading and unpacked without creating blocked walkways. If you have an extensive collection, tell your removalist about the number of cartons and any unusually valuable or fragile items when requesting a quote.
