Hidden Costs of Moving House: What to Watch Out For

Budgeting for a move usually starts with getting a quote from a removal bond cleaner or a moving company. However, many Australians experience sticker shock when various unexpected expenses crop up during the relocation process.

Being aware of these hidden costs ahead of time allows you to build a realistic financial buffer and avoid unwanted surprises.

1. Specialty Item and Heavy Lift Fees

Standard moving quotes typically cover general furniture like sofas, beds, and standard boxes. However, specialty items often carry additional fees.

Pianos and Pool Tables: These items require specialist equipment, extra muscle, and specialized transport trucks.

Difficult Access Surcharges: If your property has multiple flights of stairs, a long driveway, or tight street access that prevents the truck from parking close, removalists may charge extra for labour time.

2. Temporary Storage and Double Handling

Sometimes moving dates don't align perfectly—such as when settlement is delayed or there is a gap between leases.

Storage Units: Renting a secure storage facility and paying for double handling (loading into storage, then reloading into the truck) can add unexpected weekly costs to your budget.

3. Packing Supplies and Convenience Purchases

It is easy to underestimate how many boxes, rolls of tape, and metres of bubble wrap you will actually need.

Box Upgrades: Buying brand-new heavy-duty boxes, mattress protectors, and specialty wardrobe cartons can cost hundreds of dollars if purchased ad-hoc.

4. Utility Connection Fees and Connection Gaps

Connecting electricity, gas, and internet at a new property often involves initial connection fees or activation charges from service providers.

Conclusion

Anticipating these hidden expenses helps you keep your finances under control. Always ask removalists about potential surcharges upfront and plan your budget comprehensively.
