How to Move a Garage or Workshop Full of Tools and Equipment

The garage is often the last room packed and the first place problems appear on moving day. Tools are heavy, sharp and sometimes dangerous, and workshops can contain equipment that needs specific preparation.

Starting early and following a few safety rules makes moving a garage far more manageable.

Start Weeks Before Moving Day

Garages accumulate years of paint tins, broken equipment, excess timber and half-finished projects. Begin sorting well before the rest of the house is packed.

Separate items into:

  • Tools and equipment to keep
  • Items to sell or donate
  • Hazardous materials to dispose of safely
  • Rubbish to remove

Old paint, fuels, oils, solvents, gas bottles and pool chemicals generally cannot travel on a moving truck. Dispose of them according to your local council's hazardous waste guidelines.

Pack Heavy Tools in Small Boxes

Never fill large boxes with tools. Instead, use small, sturdy boxes and keep each one light enough to carry safely.

Wrap sharp edges and blades with padding or cardboard, and secure them so they cannot cut through packaging. Keep tool sets together and fasten loose items like drill bits and screwdrivers into their cases.

Prepare Power Tools and Machinery

For petrol-powered equipment such as mowers, chainsaws and trimmers:

  • Drain fuel and oil according to manufacturer guidelines
  • Clean off grass, dirt and debris
  • Remove or secure loose blades and attachments

For cordless tools, charge batteries before the move and pack them with their chargers. Keep batteries away from metal objects that could short their terminals.

Dismantle and Bundle Long Items

Ladders, shelving, workbenches and long-handled tools take up less space when dismantled and bundled.

Bundle similar items together with padding at contact points, and keep hardware in labelled bags taped to the item they belong to.

Label Everything by Function, Not Just Location

Instead of writing only "garage", use labels such as:

  • Garage – Hand Tools
  • Garage – Power Tools – Fragile
  • Garage – Garden Equipment
  • Garage – Hardware and Fittings

This makes setting up a functional workspace in the new garage much faster.
