How to Move a Large Dining Table and Glass Furniture Safely

Dining tables often become the centrepiece of a home, but moving them can be challenging when they have large dimensions, heavy tops or delicate glass components.

Glass dining tables require special attention because the surface can be vulnerable to impacts, uneven pressure and sudden movement. A careful moving plan helps reduce the risk of damage and injury.

Assess the Table Before Packing

Inspect the table to understand how it is constructed. Determine whether the legs, base or supporting frame can be removed according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Take photographs before disassembly and keep the screws and fittings in a clearly labelled bag.
  • Measure the table and check the dimensions of doorways, hallways, staircases and lifts to identify access problems before moving day.

Protect the Glass Surface

If the tabletop is removable, follow the manufacturer's guidance for safe removal and handling. Use enough trained people and appropriate equipment for the size and weight of the panel.

  • Wrap glass in suitable protective materials designed for fragile items.
  • Add padding to vulnerable edges and corners, and prevent the surface from contacting hard objects.
  • Clearly identify glass components as fragile and keep them separate from heavy cartons and metal furniture parts.

Avoid Uneven Pressure

Glass can be damaged by concentrated pressure, twisting and impacts. Avoid placing heavy items on top of the protected tabletop or forcing it into a tight space.

Keep the panel supported according to the manufacturer's recommendations throughout handling and transport. Do not carry oversized glass pieces without suitable equipment and trained assistance.

Protect the Table Frame and Plan the Route

Wooden, metal and stone table bases can also be scratched or damaged. Wrap detachable components separately and protect corners, decorative surfaces and protruding fittings.

Clear the moving path and make sure there is sufficient space to manoeuvre the table safely. Secure all items appropriately so they cannot slide or collide with other belongings during transport.

Inspect the Table After Delivery

Once the table reaches your new home, inspect the glass, frame and fittings before reassembly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when putting the furniture back together.

Do not use a table with cracked glass, unstable supports or damaged fasteners until it has been assessed and repaired appropriately.
