How to Move a Spa or Hot Tub: What Homeowners Should Plan For

A spa or hot tub can weigh several hundred kilograms even before it is filled with water. Moving one requires more than muscle power, as incorrect handling can damage the shell, plumbing, wiring and the property around it.

Whether your spa is travelling to a new home or being relocated within your property, planning ahead makes the job safer and more predictable.

Understand What You Are Moving

Before booking any transport, gather the essential details about your spa:

  • Make and model, where available
  • Approximate dimensions including any cabinet or steps
  • Whether it is a portable spa or a built-in, in-ground installation
  • How it is currently connected to power and plumbing

Portable spas are generally easier to relocate than built-in units. An in-ground spa usually involves drainage, plumbing and sometimes structural work, and may require specialist trades rather than a standard removal.

Drain and Disconnect the Spa Safely

A spa should never be moved while it contains water. Drain it completely in the days before the move, following your manufacturer's instructions.

Electrical connections should be disconnected by a licensed electrician where hardwiring is involved. Heating and pump systems can retain residual water, so check whether drain plugs need to be opened for the journey.

Keep any fittings, covers and accessories together in labelled bags so they are easy to find at the new location.

Plan the Route From Start to Finish

Measure the spa and compare those measurements with gates, side paths, doorways and any steps along the route.

Also check the property at the destination. A spa that comes out of one home easily can still be difficult to install at another with narrower access.

Share photos of the access route with your removalist before moving day so the right equipment and number of movers can be arranged.

Use the Right Equipment and Protection

Heavy spas are usually moved using spa dollies, rollers or similar purpose-built equipment rather than being lifted by hand.

The spa shell should be protected with suitable padding, and the cover should be secured so it cannot shift or blow off during transport.

Do not place heavy items on top of the spa, and make sure it is restrained properly inside the vehicle.

Consider Site Preparation at the New Property

A spa needs a level, load-bearing surface and appropriate clearance around it. Before moving day, confirm that the slab, deck or base at the new property can support the spa's weight and that power and drainage arrangements are in place.

Reconnection of electrical and plumbing services should be carried out by appropriately licensed tradespeople.
