How to Move a Wine Collection Without Spoiling Your Bottles

Wine collections can represent years of careful collecting and significant financial value. Bottles are sensitive to temperature, light, vibration and handling, making relocation a delicate task.

Whether you own a modest selection or an extensive cellar, careful planning can help your bottles arrive in good condition.

Assess Your Collection Before Packing

Start by creating an inventory of your bottles, including the producer, vintage and approximate value. Photograph bottles where appropriate, particularly those that are rare or valuable.

Decide which bottles genuinely need to travel with you. Some collectors choose to drink, gift or sell certain bottles rather than transport them.

Pack Bottles in Suitable Containers

Ordinary moving boxes are rarely suitable for wine. Consider purpose-built wine boxes with individual cell dividers, which keep bottles separated and cushioned.

Pack bottles horizontally if they have natural corks, as this keeps the cork moist during the journey. Secure each bottle so it cannot shift or strike neighbouring bottles.

Fill empty spaces with appropriate cushioning to prevent movement inside the carton.

Protect Bottles From Temperature and Vibration

Wine can be damaged by extreme temperatures and sustained vibration. Avoid leaving bottles in a hot vehicle or directly in sunlight during loading and transit.

For valuable collections, discuss temperature-controlled transport options or consult a specialist wine relocation service.

Consider Insurance and Declarations

Ask your removalist whether high-value items such as wine are covered under the standard arrangement, and clarify any applicable conditions before booking.

Keep your inventory, photographs and any valuation records accessible in case questions arise after delivery.

Move Your Collection With Confidence

Tell your removalist about your wine collection before moving day so appropriate handling arrangements can be discussed.
