How to Move Books and a Home Library Without Damaging Them
Book collections are heavy, dense and surprisingly easy to damage during a move. From warped spines to collapsed boxes, the problems usually come down to packing method rather than bad luck.
Whether you own a few shelves or a full home library, these steps will help your books arrive in good condition.
Sort and Cull Before Packing
Books multiply quietly over the years. Before packing, separate your collection into books to keep, donate, sell or pass on to friends.
This is especially worthwhile for interstate moves, where the weight of your shipment directly affects transport requirements.
Use Small, Strong Boxes
Books are one of the heaviest common household items relative to their size. A large box of books can quickly exceed what is safe to lift.
Use small or medium boxes in good condition, and reinforce the bottom with extra tape. A good rule of thumb is that one person should be able to carry each box comfortably.
Pack Books Correctly
There are three safe orientations for packing books:
- Flat, in stacks: Best for hardcovers and valuable books, larger volumes at the bottom.
- Upright, spines down: Place books upright with the spine at the bottom of the box so the pages, not the spine, bear the weight.
- Upright as on a shelf: Suitable for sturdy paperbacks packed snugly so they cannot lean.
Avoid packing books with the spines facing upward or the pages downward, as both can damage bindings over a long journey.
Fill gaps with crushed packing paper so books cannot shift, but do not cram boxes so tightly that covers are pressed out of shape.
Protect Valuable and Delicate Volumes
For rare, antique or sentimental books, wrap each volume separately in acid-free tissue or clean paper. Keep them away from moisture, and transport particularly valuable books with you where practical.
Never stack heavy objects on top of book boxes, and keep them away from liquids during loading and storage.
Plan Your Shelving for the New Home
Bookshelves should be dismantled where possible, with shelves, hardware and fittings labelled for reassembly.
Before moving day, decide where the shelves will go in your new home and unpack books directly onto them room by room. This turns a mountain of boxes into a quickly organised library.
Get Help With the Heavy Boxes
A home library can add hundreds of kilograms to a move. Professional movers can handle the heavy lifting so your books and your back both arrive safely.
