How to Set Up Internet and Utilities at Your New Home Before You Move

Arriving at a new home with no power, water or internet turns an exciting first day into a frustrating one. Arranging connections in advance keeps your move-in comfortable and functional.

Here is how to organise your services so everything is working when you walk through the door.

Start Two to Three Weeks Before Moving Day

Connection times vary widely. Electricity and gas can often be connected quickly, while internet installations may involve waiting for technician appointments, particularly in new estates and regional areas.

Contact providers as soon as your moving date is confirmed.

Create a Services Checklist

Work through each service for both your old and new properties:

  • Electricity
  • Gas
  • Water
  • Internet and home phone
  • Mobile services if changing plans or addresses

For your current home, arrange disconnection for the day after you leave rather than the day you leave, so you have light and power during the final clean-up.

Organise Internet Installation Early

Internet is usually the slowest service to arrange, especially where a new modem, nbn connection or technician visit is required.

Book the earliest available installation appointment, ideally before or on your move-in date. If the property already has an active service, transferring an existing plan can be faster than a new connection.

Meter Readings and Final Bills

On your last day at the old property, take a photo of the electricity, gas and water meter readings. This helps ensure final bills are accurate.

Keep records of account numbers, connection dates and confirmation emails together in one place so you can reference them if any billing questions arise.

Check Safety Devices and Basics on Arrival

Once you arrive, confirm that:

  • Power points, lights and hot water are working
  • Smoke alarms are functional
  • The switchboard is labelled and accessible
  • Water taps and toilets operate normally

Report any issues to your provider, landlord or agent immediately rather than waiting.

Plan Your First Night

Keep phone chargers, torches, bedding and basic kitchen items in your essentials bag in case any connection runs later than planned.
