Moving House During Rainy Weather: How to Protect Your Belongings

Rain can make moving day more complicated. Wet pathways, slippery entrances and damp packing materials increase the risk of damage and create additional safety concerns when furniture is being loaded or unloaded.

Although you cannot control the weather, preparing for a rainy moving day can help protect your belongings and keep your relocation organised.

Check the Weather Forecast

Monitor the forecast in the days leading up to your move. If heavy rain is expected, speak with your removalist about access conditions, timing and any necessary adjustments.

Make sure the vehicle can access the property safely. If your driveway or loading area is prone to flooding, discuss alternative arrangements before moving day.

Protect Cartons and Furniture

Use strong cartons in good condition and avoid placing them directly on wet ground. Keep packed belongings in a dry indoor area until they are ready to be loaded.

  • Waterproof coverings: Use suitable protective coverings for furniture when needed, taking care not to trap moisture against surfaces for extended periods.
  • Sensitive items: Mattresses, upholstered furniture and wooden items require particular attention because water can cause staining, swelling or prolonged drying times.

Give Electronics Extra Protection

Televisions, computers, speakers and other electrical devices should be packed in suitable protective packaging and kept dry.

Disconnect equipment before packing and allow wet items to dry completely before reconnecting them. Never handle electrical equipment with wet hands or use electrical appliances in wet conditions. Keep important documents, chargers and essential personal items in a separate, protected bag that stays with you.

Reduce Slipping Hazards

Wet floors, outdoor steps and tiled entrances can become slippery. Keep walkways clear and use suitable non-slip measures where appropriate.

Do not allow water to accumulate inside the property. Place absorbent mats near entrances and check that protective floor coverings do not create additional slipping or tripping hazards. Anyone carrying furniture should have a clear route and suitable footwear.

Plan the Loading and Unloading Process

Where possible, use sheltered areas to stage cartons and prepare furniture for loading. Coordinate the sequence of items so belongings are not left exposed to rain unnecessarily.

Check cartons after unloading and dry any surfaces that have become wet. Allow damp items to dry in a well-ventilated area before storing them.
