Moving to Regional Australia: How to Plan a Move Beyond the Capital Cities

More Australians are relocating to regional cities and towns in search of more space, affordable housing and a change of pace.

Whether you are moving to a regional centre in South Australia, Victoria or beyond, moving beyond the capital cities involves a few extra planning steps compared with a local suburban move.

Research Your New Location

Before committing to a regional move, spend time understanding the area.

Consider:

• Distance to supermarkets, medical centres and hospitals
• Schools and childcare options
• Public transport and commute times
• Internet and mobile coverage
• Local employment if you are not working remotely
• Community facilities and services

Visiting the area before you move can help you confirm it suits your lifestyle.

Plan a Realistic Timeline

Regional moves often involve longer travel distances, which can affect pickup, transit and delivery times.

Confirm your dates early and discuss timing expectations with your removalist so transportation can be scheduled appropriately.

Declutter Before You Pack

Longer distances make moving costs more sensitive to the volume of your belongings.

Sort your household into items to keep, donate, sell and dispose of. Moving fewer items can simplify packing, loading and delivery.

Pack for the Distance

Belongings travelling to regional destinations may spend longer on the road.

• Use strong boxes and quality packing tape
• Wrap fragile items carefully with suitable cushioning
• Label every carton with its destination room
• Keep an essentials bag with you for the trip

Consider Access at Your New Property

Regional properties can have access considerations that city homes do not.

Check, and mention to your removalist:

• Long or gravel driveways
• Gates, clearance and turning space for trucks
• Narrow country roads, bridges or weight restrictions
• Steep blocks or limited parking near the entrance

Good access information helps the moving team arrive prepared.

Arrange Services Before You Arrive

Connections in regional areas can sometimes take longer to organise than in the city.

Before moving day, arrange:

• Electricity and gas connections
• Water, internet and phone services
• Mail redirection
• Medical, dental and school enrolments where relevant

Think About Storage

If your regional property is not settlement-ready, or you are building, short-term storage can keep your belongings safe in the meantime.

Movers Near You provides storage options alongside its removal services.

Specialty Items Need Advance Notice

Pianos, pool tables, safes and other heavy or delicate items need careful handling on any move.

Tell your removalist in advance about specialty items so the right equipment and labour can be arranged.

Choose Removalists Experienced in Regional Moves

Longer distances, country access and flexible delivery windows require experience. Look for a removalist who asks about your inventory, your dates and access at both properties before quoting.
